Earlier we had a real treat in store for us as we unwrapped a box of delectable delicacies from hannah’s, the newest addition to Winchester’s list of bed and breakfast establishments. But this is no run of the mill B&B… to which this breakfast box testified. The homemade marmalade and jam are heavy with fruit and unctuous in consistency, and the house granola mix, a virtuous addition to a healthy breakfast. This was literally a taste of the city’s latest luxury accommodation offering.
And we do not use the term ‘luxury’ lightly. We had the great pleasure to visit hannah’s Bed and Breakfast recently and we promptly fell in love with what we saw. The place itself is set back from a quiet central street in a secluded courtyard so you immediately feel calmer as you approach. A sheltered seating area outside will undoubtedly be popular with residents in the summer, but for us the real draw was entering via a beautifully decorated sitting room. With gorgeously deep blue walls, log fire, oversized sofas, rows of books and an Honesty Bar, here is a room in which we would happily laze for hours.
Through an archway lies a large, airy space where breakfast is taken by guests. Whether this is accompanied by someone at the piano at the end of the room, we do not know. But we would like to think so.
Upstairs there are three spacious, individually designed bedrooms, all with super king size beds, with quirky en suite copper showers and, as a unique twist, bath tubs situated on a mezzanine level reached only by a space-saving compact staircase. Caution is advised if bathing after a gin or two! It’s challenging to do the rooms justice in this short post as each had its own charm and style. What was evident throughout, however, was how much love and attention had gone into the detail of each room.
We had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Hannah McIntyre, during our visit and were immediately won over by her charming, welcoming nature. The ethos of hannah’s is that the guest’s comfort is of the utmost importance and Hannah strives to make each one truly enjoy their experience in her home. It’s always a joy to meet an entrepreneur who is driven by a passion to host and we can see that she has, in this quaint corner of Winchester, brought together all the elements needed to make this luxury boutique hotel-style experience a real hit with visitors. After all, if we didn’t live just down the road, we’d be looking to book straight away.
